Do you have a beauty habit that you feel guilty about? Clogged pores, acne, and skin damage can result from bad beauty habits and we must train ourselves to shift away from them. Changing a habit is not easy because it takes about 3 weeks to make a good habit and for it to be formulated into your routine. Here are some bad beauty habits that you could be doing and how to change them!

  1. Sleeping with makeup on. We all know how tiring and exhausting it can be when you’re coming back from parties, shopping, weddings, or even dinner. The moment you step into your home, you feel an obligation to just go straight to bed and get some rest because you’re so tired to even wash up. We all have those days, but this is something we must avoid. Sleeping with makeup on can lead to excess oil and clogged pores, which will lead to acne occurring. Makeup products will build up in your face if not cleaned correctly and thoroughly. I recommend gently cleansing and removing your makeup with cotton pads and micellar water. Micellar water is great for gently removing makeup and dirt off your skin while keeping your skin hydrated and toned!
  2. Not cleaning your makeup brushes. Not washing your makeup before going to bed is bad, but it is also just as bad to reuse the same makeup brushes without washing them. Makeup brushes contain lots of products, dirt, and bacteria on those bristles. As you spread product over your face, you’re also spreading those bacteria, causing you to be more prone to acne and excess oil forming on your skin. This applies to other types of brushes such as a hair brush. You always want to clean your brushes and rid of any hair strands and oils that have been stuck on those bristles.
  3. Picking your acne/pimples and always touching your face. When a pimple appears, you just can’t help, but feel the need to pop it. However, popping your pimple can cause bacteria to spread to other areas of your ace surrounding that pimple. This can cause you to develop more pimples. Popping pimples can always cause a scar and slow down your healing process. If you struggle with acne, I recommend using my KD Acne Kit which consists of acne wash, acne treatment pads, oil-free moisturizer, and an acne spot treatment.
  4. Not protecting your skin with sunscreen or using the right one. Did you know that 90% of our skin aging comes from sun exposure? Choosing the right sunscreen is important for your skin. I prefer using mineral sunscreen because it is safer for the skin! Too much sun exposure can cause a higher risk of skin cancer, sunburns, and any other skin irregularities from the sun. You can try out my KD Mineral Glow Sun Defense which is a 100% physical sunscreen that provides UVA/UVB protection! This formula is sheer and has a moisturizing based so it is perfect for wearing under your makeup.
  5. Washing your hair too much or every day. As much as it’s important to keep your hair clean, it’s also important to retain those natural oils in your hair. When you wash your hair too much, you can strip away your natural hair oils, causing your hair strands to become drier and brittle. This habit can also disrupt the microbiome in your scalp. The microbiome is the good and natural bacteria and fungi that live on our skin and function to protect us from other bad bacteria. If you are always noticing some damages on your hair, I recommend using my KD Hair Growth Kit that features a shampoo, conditioner, and a hair growth serum. This 3-step haircare prevents DHT production and stimulates collagen production.
  6. Use water that is too hot during your showers. Hot showers can feel nice after a long and exhausting day at work or an outing. However, hot water can cause skin dryness, redness, irritation, and skin peeling. I recommend showering with lukewarm water instead.
  7. Frequently do your nails. Everyone loves getting their manicure and pedicures done for special events such as birthdays, graduations, or weddings. We all have to glam up once in a while. However, constantly painting your nails can make your nails more vulnerable to keratin granulation. Keratin granulation is when your nails dry out your nail beds and stain your nails as well. If your nails are already in that condition, just moisturize your nails or gently buff them out.  If you are planning to glam up your nails, make sure the nail salon you go to is sanitary. Tell your nail technician to keep your cuticles on because they are important for nail growth and protection.
  8. It is important to exfoliate your skin but don’t over-exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin is a must to clear off any dead skin cells and unclogged pores. This routine is essential especially if you’ve been sweating all day or wearing makeup. How do you know if you’re exfoliating too much? You’ll realize that you’ve exfoliated too much if you notice your skin becoming red, dry, and flaky. Exfoliating too much can also cause you to lose the natural sebum on your face. I recommend exfoliating about 2 times a week and pairing it with a moisturizer afterward.
