On average, American adults spend eight and a half hours per day in front of the computer, a phone, or other devices. But have you ever considered how excess screen-time affects your health? Recent studies show gadgets are capable of causing damage to our skin through blue light emissions. Although blue light has the shortest wavelength (380-400nm in range), it has the highest frequency. Long-term blue light exposure is known to negatively effect the skin in more ways than one. Exposure to blue light can be responsible for inflammation and stressors that are known to antagonize photo-aging.

Blue light is capable of causing damage to the skin's DNA cells

Skin stressors can take a toll on the skin's surface -- causing it to weaken over time. A weakened skin surface could potentially result in the onset of conditions like hyperpigmentation, melasma, and skin discoloration. If you spend a majority of your day in front of a screen or scrolling through Instagram, this may be contributing to redness, melasma, and skin dullness. In the same way that UVA & UVB rays are able to cause irreparable damage, the effect of blue light could be just as damaging. Studies have shown that blue light is capable of causing damage to the skin's DNA cells -- often resulting in inflammation and increased skin redness. At home, the KD Skincare Triple Shot Serum does a fabulous job at combatting pollutants, free radicals, and decreasing redness. Incorporate this serum every morning before sunscreen to prevent damager and promote calmer, radiant skin.

The long term effects could potentially increase one's risk of developing health complications in the future

On a recent episode of my podcast, Beauty Bytes with Dr. Kay: Secrets of a Plastic Surgeon™️, I chat with founder of Tech Wellness, August Brice. With an expertise in helping others find a balance between technology and good health practices, August knows firsthand the negative impact technology can have on the skin. We discuss some of the ways modern technology can harm the body. The Electromagnetic field (EMF) waves that devices emit are known to be a form of electromagnetic radiation. While this type of radiation is generally considered harmless, the long term effects could potentially increase one's risk of developing health complications in the future. One of the easiest solutions for minimizing contact with EMF August provides is simply turning off devices when they aren't in use. Every minute counts and your skin will thank you later! In many ways, technology and new innovations are meant to make our live's easier but at what cost? Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are known to cause anxiety, insomnia, headache, fatigue, and skin irritation in some. The onset of symptoms like anxiety or insomnia can cause somewhat of a domino effect when it comes to our health. A lack of sleep can cause your skin to appear dry, dull, and irritated over time. While many of us will have a hard time disconnecting, decreased screen time and designated cut-off hours each night could not only improve the quality of your sleep, it could be life-changing!

"An increased internal skin temperature could be dangerous for darker skin types"

Physical sunscreens are trending and for good reason. The active mineral ingredients that physical sunscreens are formulated with have UV blocking properties that will keep you protected from environmental skin damage. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide protect the skin without causing an increased internal skin temperature like most chemical sunscreens do. An increased internal skin temperature could be dangerous for darker skin types and those prone to skin condition like melasma. Heat is scientifically proven to cause dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma but that doesn't mean you shouldn't wear sunscreen!

The KD Skincare Clear Sheer Sunscreen and KD Skincare Perfecting Sunshield are both very popular amongst my patients, models & young Hollywood actresses, and staff alike. These physical sunscreens offer SPF 50+ protection from UV rays and are formulated with green tea to promote a calmer complexion immediately after application. Try the KD Perfecting Sunshield for a light coverage, universal tint. Sensitive skin types, children, and everyone in between will love the KD Skincare Clear Sheer sunscreen for its efficacious protection and mattifying properties. t offer calming properties   I also recommend picking a sunscreen that is composed of less chemical ingredients. All of the sunscreens in the KD Skincare line are free of parabens, rich with antioxidants, green tea polyphenols, and Vitamin E. Look younger and radiant by caring for your skin each and every day. Remember, apply sunscreen each and every morning whether you're working from home or heading to Runyon Canyon. Your skin will thank you later.
