Luscious lips, gorgeous pouts, and beautiful smiles- these features are often sought out and popularized by girls and guys everywhere. Some of us, however, may not be genetically blessed with lips like Angelina Jolie, but that’s why we have procedures such as lip filler. While lip filler is more common, lip flips are another great way to volumize your pout.

What is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is a nonsurgical procedure that uses neuromodulators, such as Botox, to relax the muscle in the upper lip. To be more specific, Botox is injected as micro-droplets into the orbicularis oris! In doing so, the vermillion border of the lip rolls outwards and “flips”. As a result, this technique is ideal for people who have a gummy smile.

Lip Flip VS Lip Filler

Lip filler adds volume to the lips while also smoothing out fine lines. The results are more dramatic than that of a lip flip. Lip flips, on the other hand, can make your lips look fuller without any added volume. The injectable used is also different. While lip filler uses dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid (Ex. Juvederm), lip flips use primarily Botox.

Lip Flip Pros:
  • Quick, and requires no downtime. You can do it during your lunch break and carry on with your day.
  • It’s a cheaper alternative than filler. Since it only requires 4-6 units of Botox, it’s relatively inexpensive.
  • Lasts for up to three months. This is great if you want to try it without making a long-term commitment.
  • Results are natural. Because there’s no additional volume but your own, the natural shape of your lips are enhanced and not as dramatic.
Lip Flip Cons:
  • Like all Botox treatments, the results are temporary. This may not be ideal for those who want more permanent results.
  • Results are not immediate. Botox can take effect after about 2 weeks.
  • It’s not suitable for everyone. Ex) If you have very thin lips, then your may not see a dramatic enough difference with a lip flip
  • It takes time to adjust to the feeling of Botox around the mouth. Some people find that their lips feel a bit stiff and unnatural after the treatment.
Lip Filler Pros:
  • Results are immediate and require no downtime.
  • Results are long-lasting. It can last anywhere from 6-12 months.
  • Results are more dramatic. Great for those looking to make a more noticeable enhancement or significant change.
  • It’s versatile. This means you can choose how much or how little you want your lips to be filled in order to achieve your desired look.
Lip Filler Cons:
  • Typically more expensive than a lip flip.
  • The chance of swelling and bruising after the treatment are more significant.
  • Has the potential to migrate, especially if done with an inexperienced injector
  • Long-term commitment. If you end up not liking your results, you’d need to take extra time to create an appointment to get it dissolved.
