Shiatsu, deep-tissue, and Swedish massages- there are so many ways to destress and decompress your body. Today, we’re introducing to you the lymphatic drainage massage! This massage encourages the movement of lymphatic fluids throughout the body which in turn can provide a multitude of different benefits. Not only is it great for reducing swelling in your arms or legs, but it also works to depuff and contour your body.Understanding How it WorksTo first understand how the lymphatic drainage massage works, you’d need to have a basic understanding of how the lymphatic system works first. The lymphatic system contains vessels and nodes with fluids known as “lymphs”. Lymphs are a mixture of protein, water, waste products, and immune system elements. Located throughout the body are lymph nodes. Lymph nodes filter the debris out to ensure "clean" lymph is transported back to the veins that carry blood toward the heart. What is it?Now that you know how the lymphatic system works, let’s talk about the massage. The lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle form of massage designed to alleviate painful swelling that may be found in your arms or legs. This painful swelling is usually caused by the stagnant build up of those lymphatic fluids. This is called Lymphedema. The goal of the massage is to help move the lymphs to the lymph nodes that are found throughout your body. The main lymph nodes can be found in your neck, armpits, or groin area. Other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lipedema can also benefit from receiving this massage. Rheumatoid arthritis is arthritis found in the joints while lipedema occurs when excess fat accumulates in the lower body. The massage, however, is not recommended for those struggling with congestive heart failure, liver problems, kidney problems, or have a history of blood clots/strokes.Benefits of the MassageBesides increasing the flow of lymph fluids, lymphatic drainage massages contain a variety of other benefits. These include:

  • Stimulating blood circulation
  • Promoting tissue regeneration
  • Eliminating toxins which help to improve the immune system
  • Reducing swelling/inflammation
  • Minimizing the appearance of cellulite. This is done by reducing the amount of fluid that presses up against the cross-hatched fibers found beneath the skin
  • Destressing the mind & body
  • Energizing the overall body
  • Promoting a body contouring effect

Getting StartedThe lymphatic drainage massage itself involves a 2-step process:

  1. Clearing - the release of lymphatic fluid in your tissues. The purpose is to create a vacuum with gentle pressure in order to bring in more fluid and create a flushing effect.
  2. Reabsorption - the movement of the lymphatic fluid to your lymph nodes. A gentle, sweeping motion should be performed with just enough pressure to shift the surface of the skin.

There are also 2 types of lymphatic drainage massage techniques:

  1. Manual- Done by a qualified therapist or licensed professional
  2. Simple- Anyone can do it at home. It’s recommended to use tools like a gua sha or dry brush while using a lubricant like an oil or lotion. You can also watch videos online to help guide you on the proper way to massage yourself.

Regardless of which route you decide to take, remember to stay hydrated post-massage to maintain its benefits!
