Summer SPF Tips!

Hi Beauties!

It's officially summer and you know what that means: more fun in the Sun! But with more tan time in the Sun means more Sun exposure - putting your skin at risk for damage and pigmentation! Summer also comes with an increase in factors that can affect our skin. Along with the heat, sweating and an increase in UV ray intensity can increase someone’s chances of sunburn and aging spots. Dirt, dust, and sweat can also clog sweat ducts in the skin, trapping perspiration which results in itchy rashes and blisters.

Curious on how to get a tan and show off your beach body while still protecting your skin? Check out my tips below!

1. Sunscreen, all day every day!

The key to flawless skin not only during the summer but year round comes from wearing sunblock! Even on cloudy days 80% of the Sun’s rays are absorbed by your skin and put you at risk for wrinkles and dark spots. The biggest mistake women make is not wearing sunscreen when they go to the beach or just go about their day to day. Like face masks right now, sunscreen is a MUST!

2. Mineral Sunscreens > Chemical Sunscreens.

Mineral sunscreens above 50 SPF are great for both the face and body! Mineral sunscreens are much better than chemical sunscreens. They completely block the UV rays, whereas chemical sunscreens allow chemicals and rays to go into your skin and release the UV rays as heat. This means with chemical sunscreens UV rays and chemicals can soak into your skin, making mineral sunscreens much better for those with melasma or skin pigmentation problems. Look for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide!

As for specific sunscreens, I love using my two KD sunscreens: KD Perfecting Sunshield and KD Clear Sheer Sunscreen. Both are mineral sunscreens with SPF 50. The Perfecting Sunshield is perfect for sun protection while getting a nice tint for the face, whereas the Sheer Sunscreen is perfect for high SPF protection on the face and throughout the body without a tint! Both also have antioxidants and Vitamin C that act as a light but powerful protection from the Sun.

3. Exfoliate to Prevent Summer Breakouts!

Summer breakouts are mainly caused due to an increase in heat and humidity, which intensify oil production and lead to pores getting clogged with dirt. To prevent this, I would recommend exfoliating! Keep your face clean specifically by using glycolic products to exfoliate! I like using my KD Glycolic Wash, which helps exfoliate and cleanses your face from dirt buildup from the day. Just remember to not over exfoliate. Many people assume that you should exfoliate often to get rid of the skin cells, but in reality, over-exfoliating in the summer strips everything from your pores. Your skin then produces more oil to recover, leading to even more oily skin.
