Sulfate-free shampoos, hydrating conditioners, and various hair oils- taking the health of your hair seriously is emphasized almost everywhere. While hair care is nothing new, that doesn’t mean there aren’t new trends circling around or new products being pushed out on shelves for us to try. With that said, I’ll be going over the top hair care trends we expect to see for 2023.

SCALP EXFOLIATION

Hair experts would agree that having healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. That’s why in 2023, scalp treatments will be trending! In 2022, “scalp treatment” had an average monthly search value of 162,300. We’ll see scalp exfoliation begin to integrate itself into hair routines. Chemical scalp exfoliation, and peels for your scalp are currently gaining more traction. If you’re interested, Camille Howard- Verovic, a board-certified dermatologist, states that ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, and salicylic acid are great for scalp exfoliation.Benefits of Scalp Exfoliating:

  • Expedites the scalp’s cell turnover
  • Gets rid of product buildup
  • Reduces flaking
  • Ensures hair follicles aren’t clogged by oil or keratin debris

This treatment is specifically great for those who are suffering from dry scalps, dandruff, or even oily hair. Although, keep in mind that it can be easy to over-exfoliate. Because of this, doctors recommend exfoliating your scalp only once a week or every other week.

STIMULATING THE SCALP

Taking good care of your scalp doesn’t stop there. People will begin to use different tools like a gua sha comb to massage and stimulate the scalp. Additionally, some consumers are even using a dermaroller to help treat thinning hair. A dermaroller is a similar tool used in microneedling where tiny needles are rolled over the skin to create controlled wounds. Some people believe that the microdamage from this tool helps to enhance circulation and produce new blood vessels. In turn, this will stimulate the hair follicles to promote hair growth.BOND-BUILDING PRODUCTSIf you’ve heard of Olaplex, chances are you know what bond-building products are. Bond- building products are hair products designed to repair and strengthen damaged hair.Your hair contains:

  • Disulfide bonds- breaks down from chemical treatments
  • Hydrogen bonds- breaks down from repeated water exposure
  • Salt bonds- breaks down from harsh ingredients

Basically, bond-building products are meant to repair these 3 bonds! Common key ingredients found in bond-builders are small, organic acids such as malic, maleic, and citric acid. According to Jeni Thomas, a global scientist for Pantene, these ingredients build ionic and electrostatic linkages which helps to strengthen the hair’s protein structure. Lipids like cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol can also be found in bond builders and these ingredients rebuild bonds broken due to heat damage. Overall, these products are best for those who love to constantly bleach, dye, or style their hair.

ROSEMARY OIL

While there are many ingredients to look out for when shopping for hair care products, rosemary oil, in particular, is the trending hair ingredient going viral on social media. The hashtag #rosemaryoil has 211.2 million views on TikTok alone with videos of creators showing their before/afters. Many users claim that rosemary oil makes their hair grow longer, thicker, softer, and shinier. In one study, patients who used rosemary oil saw hair growth after six months of use and noticed less scalp itching! If you’re planning to use rosemary oil as part of your routine, make sure to dilute it and never apply it directly to your scalp. You can also incorporate it in your shampoos or conditioners. Recommended to use only 1-2 times a week to see results.
